What ⍼ means
Old type catalogs label it as an azimuth sign.
Catalogs from the type manufacturer H. Berthold AG in the 1950s and 1960s include ⍼ under that label. Azimuth describes a horizontal direction measured from a reference direction, often north. The catalog label establishes that historical association, rather than a rule for reading the sign in equations.
The character was subsequently preserved in ISO tables of mathematical and scientific character references and in STIX, a project supporting scientific publishing, before reaching Unicode. Its name describes its drawing: a square corner combined with a downward zigzag arrow.
A specialist technical character, with no conventional conversational tone.
Do not use the old azimuth label as proof that readers will understand ⍼ as a direction.
