Gorilla

The gorilla emoji stands for raw strength and ape energy: lifters use it for all-out "gorilla mode" training, and meme-stock traders use it to say "apes together strong." The catch: aimed at a real person's looks or behavior, it can echo a long-running anti-Black ape slur.

What 🦍 means

Strength, effort and silverback swagger, most of the time. A silverback is a mature male gorilla, named for the saddle of silver hair across his back; in family groups he usually leads. Among lifters, "gorilla mode" means training at maximum intensity, and it is also a supplement brand. The "We Go Jim" meme grew from a 2022 workout clip of bodybuilder Lexx Little in a Gorilla Mode shirt, and reposts captioned 😈🦍 glued the gorilla to gym hype.

Some people also link 🦍 to Harambe, a Cincinnati Zoo gorilla shot in 2016 after a child fell into his exhibit; he became a long-running meme. The animal's picture history is far older: a 15th-century silk miniature from Central Asia is the earliest known image of a gorilla outside Africa. The species got its first scientific description only in 1847, from American missionary Thomas Savage and anatomist Jeffries Wyman, and explorers' tales soon cast gorillas as terrifying beasts, one strand behind King Kong.

Why do stock traders use the gorilla emoji?

It marks you as one of the "apes": small investors sticking together. On Reddit's WallStreetBets forum, the motto "apes together strong", borrowed from the film Rise of the Planet of the Apes, rallied retail traders holding GameStop shares against big funds in 2021. By March 2021, members were funding gorilla conservation with their gains through symbolic adoptions.

Is the gorilla emoji offensive to send?

It can be, when it describes a person. Comparing Black people to apes is an old racist trope: Emmanuel Frémiet's 1859 sculpture of a gorilla carrying off a Black woman drew on it, and a 2008 U.S. study found such associations still skewed people's judgments. About your own workout or a trading group, 🦍 reads as slang; about someone's face, body or behavior, it reads as that slur, whatever you meant.

Playful as a gym flex, insider shorthand in meme-stock posts, risky the moment it describes a real person.

Never use it to describe someone's looks or behavior — ape comparisons carry anti-Black history.

What it means when someone sends it to you

3 readings
After a gym clip or workout brag
All-out training energy — the sender is hyping the lift.
In a stock or meme-investing thread
"We're the apes": retail traders holding together, nothing about the animal.
Aimed at someone else's looks or behavior
Likely to land as a racist ape comparison, whatever the intent.

Combination ideas

3
Meme-stock rallying cry: apes together, shares to the moon.
Apes together strong — holders staying united.
Suggested gym caption: gorilla mode, heavy lift done.

Worth knowing

  • 🦍 is a single code point, so it survives copying through almost anything — old databases, SMS gateways, printer drivers.

Questions people ask

1

Can you send the gorilla emoji as a compliment?

Only in the right lane. Hyping a friend's heavy lift or your own workout works; using it for how someone looks or acts does not — that is where it turns into a stereotype.
