๐Ÿข

office building

๐Ÿข is the office building emoji: a plain multi-storey block of windows that stands for the office, the company, or work itself. Most people send it to mean โ€œIโ€™m at workโ€ or โ€œheading to the officeโ€, to announce a new job, or to tag a company and its headquarters. It began life in Japan as simply โ€œbuildingโ€.

EmojiSince 2010

What ๐Ÿข means

An office, a company, or work in general. The picture is a tall, anonymous office block, the kind that fills a business district. Nothing on it says which business, so it works as a stand-in for any workplace: your employer, a firm you are talking about, a corporate headquarters, or the city centre full of such towers.

In profiles and posts it often labels a place of work or a company. A personโ€™s bio might read โ€œ๐Ÿข marketing ยท Manchesterโ€; a company account uses it beside its address or for โ€œvisit us at HQโ€. Property listings and local-business pages use it for commercial premises, and travel or city posts use it literally for downtown buildings.

Used alone or in a list of emoji, it is simply โ€œbuildingโ€ or โ€œcityโ€. The work reading comes from the words around it, and in everyday chat those words are nearly always about the job.

What does it mean when someone sends you ๐Ÿข?

Usually that work is where they are, or where they are going. โ€œ๐Ÿข till 6โ€ means they are stuck in the office; โ€œback ๐Ÿข tomorrowโ€ means an office day after remote days or holiday; โ€œ๐Ÿขโ€ is the morning commute. It is a status update, not a mood.

The mood comes from what sits next to it. ๐Ÿข or ๐Ÿข is the grind; ๐Ÿข or โ€œnew job ๐Ÿขโ€ is good news and deserves congratulations. Since 2020 the building has also become one half of the home-versus-office shorthand: for working from home, ๐Ÿข for days in the office, so a message like โ€œMonโ€“Wed ๐Ÿข, Thuโ€“Fri โ€ is a weekly schedule.

It almost never carries a hidden meaning. If a company name or a famous building is meant, the sender has to add the name; the emoji alone identifies no particular tower.

Why does ๐Ÿข look like any old tower block?

Because in Japan it was just โ€œbuildingโ€. ๐Ÿข comes from the emoji sets of Japanese mobile carriers, where it was named ใƒ“ใƒซ (biru, the everyday Japanese word for any multi-storey commercial building). It travelled into Unicode in 2010 alongside a whole row of place markers from the same sets: post office , hospital , bank , hotel , convenience store , school and department store . When Unicode named them in English, the generic building became โ€œoffice buildingโ€.

That origin explains two things. The glyph has no sign, logo or storefront, unlike its neighbours, so it stays generic. And next to it shows the mark, the symbol of Japanโ€™s postal service, which puzzles readers elsewhere; is the plainer post office added for everyone else.

Neutral and practical, the emoji equivalent of โ€œat workโ€. In friendly chat it can sound mock-corporate or weary, depending on what sits beside it.

It names no specific company or landmark; add the name if one is meant.

Drift: Once a plain place marker, ๐Ÿข picked up a second job after 2020 as the opposite of in talk about working from home versus going into the office. (as of 2026)

Worth knowing

  • In the Japanese carrier sets this emoji was simply ใƒ“ใƒซ, โ€œbuildingโ€; the English name โ€œoffice buildingโ€ narrowed it when Unicode adopted it in 2010.
  • Its neighbours came from the same sets and read like a Japanese map legend, which is why a -marked post office sits next to the office.

Questions people ask

4

Does ๐Ÿข mean a specific company?

No. It is a generic tower with no logo or sign, so it means โ€œofficeโ€ or โ€œcompanyโ€ in general. Senders add the companyโ€™s name when they mean a particular one.

Is ๐Ÿข fine to use in a professional post?

Yes. It is common in job announcements, company accounts and bios, where it marks a workplace or headquarters without sounding playful.

What is the difference between ๐Ÿข and ?

๐Ÿข is an office tower; is a department store with a shop front. They come from the same set of building emoji and are easy to mix up at small sizes.

What does vs ๐Ÿข mean in a message?

Working from home versus working at the office. People use the pair to say which days they are in, especially since 2020.
