What ⚖️ means
Justice, balance, or careful comparison.
As a scales of justice emoji, ⚖️ suits court cases, rules, ethical calls and fairness arguments; beside a list of pros and cons it means you are still deciding.
If the emoji looks black and white, UTS #51 explains why: the invisible character FE0F after the scales requests colourful emoji styling, but the receiving app or font decides the result.
Why are scales linked to justice?
The legal emblem grew from much older judgment imagery.
By ancient Egypt's Fourth Dynasty, scales already stood for judgment; later Egyptian art shows a dead person's heart weighed against the feather of Ma'at, goddess of truth. In Greek and Roman art, scales became attributes of Justice personified, as Themis and Justitia.
Legal, principled, a little courtroom-coded.

1Worth knowing
- The characters behind ⚖️ existed in Unicode 10 years before anyone was allowed to draw them in colour: Unicode 4.1 in 2005, emoji presentation in 2015.
- ⚖️ is not one character. It is 2 of them glued together, which is why deleting it sometimes takes two presses of backspace and why it breaks character counters.
