What 🇺🇳 means
It stands for the United Nations, not a nation. The light-blue flag shows a white world map surrounded by olive branches, an old symbol of peace. The UN uses it to identify the Organization itself, for example at its headquarters, meetings and peacekeeping missions in conflict zones.
Sent on its own during a friends' argument, it can be a light mediator move: "neutral ground, calm down." Read it that way only when the tone supports it. Using the flag never means the sender speaks for the UN.
Formal and institutional by default; playful only when the chat has clearly made it a peacekeeper joke.
Not a country flag, and not proof of UN endorsement.

4Worth knowing
- The characters behind 🇺🇳 existed in Unicode 6 years before anyone was allowed to draw them in colour: Unicode 6.0 in 2010, emoji presentation in 2016.
- 🇺🇳 is not one character. It is 2 of them glued together, which is why deleting it sometimes takes two presses of backspace and why it breaks character counters.
Questions people ask
1Why does my UN emoji show the letters U and N?
Your system has no image for this flag. The emoji is built from two regional-indicator letters, U and N; when a device lacks flag artwork, as Windows does for country flags, it displays those letters instead.
