What ䷽ means
Stay modest: handle the small matter and don't force a breakthrough. A hexagram is a six-line figure built from two three-line trigrams. In the I Ching, the Chinese Book of Changes, ䷽ is Hexagram 62, translated as Small Preponderance or Small Exceeding. Its reading favors handling the immediate, manageable problem, keeping promises, and avoiding escalation. The image shows thunder above mountain: movement meeting a boundary.
How old is the Book of Changes?
The figure, written text, and later commentary have different histories. Hexagram figures are generally traced to numerical divination recorded on animal bones beginning in the twelfth century BCE. The Zhouyi, an early Chinese divination text that became the core of the later Book of Changes, was written down in some form during the ninth or eighth centuries BCE. The earliest recorded account of consulting it appears in a historical narrative from the fourth century BCE.
A Chu bamboo-strip manuscript copied around 300 BCE preserves textual variants, showing that the text circulated before its wording fully settled. Later commentaries added philosophical and ethical readings; by 136 BCE, the Yijing had become canonical. Later readers emphasized either symbolic-number systems or philosophical meaning, so English titles such as Small Exceeding and Preponderance of the Small reflect interpretive choices.
Contemplative and interpretive; it signals engagement with the I Ching more than a casual mood.
Don't read it as a lucky charm: its counsel is about restraint and limited action.
