White Square Containing Black Very Small Square

21/90

🞔 is a plain geometric symbol: an outlined square with a very small black square in its middle. It carries no agreed hidden meaning. It was lifted from Microsoft's Wingdings symbol fonts, where it was the first of a short series of "box buttons" with ever-larger centres, and Unicode added it in 2014 so documents could keep the shape as real text. Where it turns up, it usually works as a bullet or a "selected" marker.

What 🞔 means

It means only what it shows: a small square framed by a larger one. It has no agreed coded meaning. If it turned up in a document or a post, it is usually decoration: a fancier bullet point or a mark that one item in a list is picked.

The shape has a history, though. Microsoft's Wingdings fonts, shipped with Windows and Office since the early 1990s, included a short series of "box buttons": a square frame holding a black square of a different size in each. When Unicode brought a large batch of Wingdings and Webdings pictures into the standard in 2014, this one came along under the plain name "white square containing black very small square"; the encoding proposal called it "box button 1". That is why the block holds oddly precise names like "very small", "small" and "medium" square: each is a different step of the same button family.

The practical catch is fonts. This is a text character, not an emoji, so you see whatever your font draws, and many fonts don't draw it at all. If you get a blank box or question mark, the message is usually fine; your font or app just can't display that character.

Neutral and geometric, with a slight 1990s software feel. Fine anywhere a bullet is fine.

It is not a checkbox: are.

Worth knowing

  • Unicode 7.0 took in a large batch of Wingdings and Webdings pictures, which is why this block is full of graded names like "tiny", "slightly small" and "very heavy" squares and circles.
  • When a font lacks 🞔 it usually shows a hollow "missing character" box instead, so the fallback looks like a cousin of the symbol it failed to draw.

Questions people ask

2

Is 🞔 a checkbox or a selected option?

Not officially. The checkbox characters are , and . Some people borrow 🞔 as a plain-text "this one is selected" dot, like a radio button, but that is a personal convention, not a standard.

Why does 🞔 show as an empty box or a question mark?

Usually your font doesn't include it. Symbol fonts such as Segoe UI Symbol on Windows, Noto Sans Symbols 2 or Symbola cover it, as of 2026. Switching to one often helps, if your app lets you choose the font.
