What 🮇 means
The fill hugs the cell's right border. It is a solid patch covering one quarter of the same-size box used for each character.
Neighboring tiles can sketch coarse pictures on that grid. Proportional fonts or extra spacing can leave gaps between them.
How did block graphics develop?
They let character-cell screens show simple pictures.
Home computers and TV teletext—the broadcast service for text-and-graphics pages—used block tiles from the 1970s onward. In its 2019 Unicode proposal, this compatibility set expanded, and the authors supplied descriptive names because vendors usually published charts, not written labels.
