What ╭ means
It turns a box’s top edge down into its left side. Its horizontal stroke runs right and its vertical stroke runs down; each continues into a neighboring character cell, one fixed-width text position. The matching row and column form the frame.
╭ belongs to the character-cell tradition of drawing forms and frames. During the 1970s and 1980s, terminals and PCs used box-drawing sets; IBM PC code page 437 included a widely used set in 1981. Unicode brings line pieces together as a shared text repertoire.
How do I type ╭?
Use Unicode input in your editor, or its character picker. In an editor with hexadecimal Unicode input, enter 256D (or U256D if the editor expects the prefix).
A terminal program can emit ╭ directly as Unicode. VT100-era terminals could instead switch to their own built-in graphics character set.
Why does ╭ not line up?
A proportional font can push the strokes off the character grid. Box corners need neighboring characters to occupy matching widths. Use a monospaced font whose box-drawing characters align.
Technical and diagrammatic; it marks a frame assembled from text cells.
A proportional font can detach the edges; use monospaced text with matching box glyphs.
