What ╫ means
Place it where a double vertical boundary crosses a single horizontal one.
This mixed-weight junction belongs at a table boundary or diagram crossing; the surrounding lines show how cells or areas connect.
The wider box-drawing set was made for fixed-width text, where each character occupies the same width, including terminal (text-only command window) tables, forms, and interface outlines. It lets plain text show structure without an image.
This drawing family predates Unicode
The wider box-drawing family was already present in legacy standards before 1990; this junction was not a one-off sign invented for Unicode. The family's history passes through vendor and terminal character sets, including IBM PC and DEC traditions.
Unicode also records links to other industry standards and to Videotex, an early screen-based information service whose mosaic pictures were built from small blocks. A similar-looking shape alone does not make two character systems interchangeable.
why does ╫ look broken
A font or spacing mismatch can break the crossing.
Box-drawing strokes are designed to meet at character-cell boundaries. A proportional font, uneven character widths, altered line spacing, or a fallback font can leave gaps or make the crossing look uneven.
Technical and diagrammatic; it reads as structure rather than emotion.
In ordinary chat, it can look like a stray piece of a table.

1Why does ╫ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.

╫\256BCodes and encoding1 code points
A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
