What ➝ means
It points forward: next, leads to, or look here.
Arrows as direction signs took hold in eighteenth-century engineering diagrams and maps, showing water flow and wheel rotation; the drawn arrow gradually lost its feathers and kept the head. Earlier, pointing hands in medieval manuscripts marked important passages, and printers later cast small ornaments, called dingbats, for directions and emphasis. ➝ comes from that dingbat line.
A neat typographic pointer: more designed than a plain arrow, but not formal or emotional.
Some fonts draw it thinner or heavier, close to another right arrow.

1Why does ➝ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
