Done, confirmed, nothing more to add. Sent alone it is the full stop at the end of a to-do: groceries bought, form submitted, meeting booked. Sent in reply to a question like “can you make Friday?” it is a quiet yes. Nobody expects an answer to it.

The tone is businesslike. ☑️ is the mark you make on a paper form, so it reads as a nod rather than a cheer. If someone wanted to celebrate they would reach for ✅ or 🎉; if they wanted to argue, they would write words. In a list it does the job a tick box does on paper: each ticked line is handled, and any ☐ left over is still open.

Why does ☑️ look different on my phone?

It started life as a text symbol, so some fonts draw it plain. The box-with-tick existed in Unicode years before emoji did, as an ordinary text symbol. When emoji arrived it was given an emoji-style presentation as well, and the invisible code after it (the “FE0F” in the fact rows) asks for that version. Apps that ignore the request, or fonts that only know the old form, show a thin black-and-white box with a tick instead. As of 2026 that still happens in some apps and systems, which is why the same message can look like a bright tile on one phone and a typed symbol on another. The meaning stays the same; mostly the warmth changes.
