What ⏼ means
It marks a switch that turns equipment on and off. The line means on, and the circle means off. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), an organization that publishes electrical-equipment standards, formalized this symbol family after related switch markings were already in use.
The marks turn switch positions into language-independent equipment labels. In the IEC set, the on and off parts also appear as separate symbols.
Does ⏼ mean standby?
It means on-off in the standard; everyday use can be looser. A manual or status label using ⏼ points to the control, not the device’s current state. In 2004, IEEE 1621 codified broader power-control practice, which helps explain why everyday labels can blur the standby distinction. Check the equipment instructions if electrical isolation matters.
Technical and interface-oriented; it reads as an equipment power-control label.
The mark does not tell you whether a switched-off device still draws power.

3Questions people ask
1Why can ⏼ look different across fonts?
Unicode’s character charts treat glyphs as reference shapes, not required designs. Fonts can vary the strokes or spacing, and some lack the character.
