pickup truck

๐Ÿ›ป is the pickup truck emoji: a light truck with a cab in front and an open cargo bed behind. People send it about hauling and moving house, about picking someone up or going for a drive, and about rural and outdoor life, from farms and job sites to camping trips. Ford pushed for this emoji, but the truck itself is generic.

What ๐Ÿ›ป means

A pickup is a car-sized truck with an open, low-walled bed for carrying loads. Unlike a van or a lorry, the cargo rides in the open behind the driver, so anything from furniture to hay bales can be thrown in and tied down. That mix of everyday car and small workhorse is why pickups are so common wherever people farm, build, tow or live far from town. In the United States they have been the best-selling vehicles for decades, and they carry a whole image with them: country music, dirt roads, tailgates, trades and rural pride.

The vehicle goes by different names around the world, and ๐Ÿ›ป covers all of them. Australians and New Zealanders call it a ute (short for utility vehicle), South Africans a bakkie, much of Latin America a camioneta, Mexico and the US border a troca. Thailand and Japan are pickup countries too, with light work trucks on every rural road. The emoji is the only one that shows the open bed, so whatever you call the truck, this is the one to type.

The emoji arrived in 2020 after a proposal from Ford, the carmaker whose F-Series pickups top US sales charts. Unicode does not encode brands, so the picture that shipped is an anonymous truck: every phone maker draws its own, usually a plain single-colour pickup seen from the side.

What does it mean when someone sends ๐Ÿ›ป?

Almost always something literal: a truck, a load, a lift or a trip. Next to a time or a place, it means "I'll come and get you" or "I'm bringing the truck", which is exactly what friends with a pickup get asked to do. With boxes or a house it is moving day; with planks or a hardware store it is a weekend project. Tradespeople and farmers use it the way others use a laptop emoji: this is work.

The second big use is atmosphere. A ๐Ÿ›ป beside a cowboy hat, a flag, a campfire or mountains sets a scene: a road trip, a country song, a weekend off-road, life out in the sticks. Truck owners also drop it into bios and captions as a badge of what they drive. Its tone is friendly, practical and a bit rugged; it carries no sarcasm and no hidden meaning, which makes it one of the easier emoji to read.

Casual, practical and good-natured; at home in family chats, work-crew groups and outdoorsy captions, odd in formal writing.

A lone ๐Ÿ›ป is not a flirt. The "pickup line" pun exists, but only when the sender spells the joke out.

Worth knowing

  • Ford, maker of the F-Series pickups that have topped US sales charts for decades, proposed this emoji in 2018. Unicode accepted the idea but, as always, kept the truck unbranded.
  • Ask for a ute in Australia, a bakkie in South Africa or a camioneta in Mexico and you get the same vehicle: a pickup. ๐Ÿ›ป is the emoji for all of them.

Questions people ask

4

Is the pickup truck emoji a Ford?

No. Ford proposed it, but Unicode never encodes brands, so each phone maker draws a generic truck. Nothing about the emoji points to any particular manufacturer.

Is there a separate ute or bakkie emoji?

No, and you don't need one. A ute and a bakkie are pickups, and ๐Ÿ›ป is the only emoji with an open cargo bed, so it is the right one in Sydney, Cape Town and Texas alike.

Why does ๐Ÿ›ป show up as an empty box on my phone?

Because the device is behind on updates. The emoji joined the standard in 2020, so phones and computers whose software has not been updated since then have no picture for it and show a blank rectangle instead.

Which emoji is the big truck or 18-wheeler?

, the articulated lorry, is the tractor-trailer rig. is a closed delivery truck. ๐Ÿ›ป is the small one with the open bed.
