What ⛽ means
Usually a literal stop for fuel, a gas station, or gas prices.
In everyday texts, ⛽ is a practical heads-up: the sender's tank is low, they are pulling into a service station before picking you up, or they are logging fuel costs on a road trip. Paired with a dollar or euro amount, it usually vents about how much it cost to fill the tank.
Outside driving talk, it shifts to metaphor. Calling coffee, a meal, or a workout "fuel" with ⛽ means energy to get through the day. In American English comments it can also stand in for the slang word "gas", which younger speakers use for something excellent (and sometimes for strong-smelling cannabis), so check the context before assuming it is about a car.
Where does the fuel pump symbol come from?
From a Japanese map symbol for gas stations.
An upright dispenser with a hanging hose and nozzle marked filling stations on signs and maps long before phones had emoji, and a similar little pump sits beside the fuel gauge in many cars. ⛽ itself entered Unicode in 2009 from a Japanese broadcasting standard's map symbol for a gas station and from the emoji sets of Japanese mobile carriers.
Casual and practical in travel texts; playful when coffee, food or a workout gets called fuel.

Questions people ask
1Why does ⛽ look different across devices?
Each platform draws its own pump, so colours, hoses and dials vary. Some apps and fonts also show it in a plain black-and-white text style instead of colour; that depends on the font and settings, not on the character.
