What does 𝓏 mean in math?
It is a calligraphic mathematical z whose formula supplies its role.
Script style marks a separate mathematical letter: 𝓏 can name something different from plain z or italic 𝑧. The surrounding expression tells you what this one denotes.
A handbook on mathematical printing already shows a script alphabet in 1954. Scientific publishers began the STIX project in 1995 to assemble glyphs needed for journals and sponsor Unicode math-alphabet proposals. The digital alphabet preserves distinctions that formatting alone can lose.
Why does 𝓏 look different in different fonts?
Math fonts draw script letters in different calligraphic styles.
Chancery is a slanted, pen-like form; roundhand is rounder. Unicode 3.1 (2001) treated those styles as interchangeable. Unicode 14.0 (2021) later added invisible selectors for some uppercase script letters, but Unicode 16.0 defines no such selector for lowercase 𝓏, leaving its drawn form to the font.

1Questions people ask
1Can normalization turn 𝓏 into plain z?
Yes. NFKC, a compatibility text-normalization form, maps mathematical styled letters to their base Latin letters, so 𝓏 becomes z. If the math style carries meaning, use a form that preserves the distinction.
How to type 𝓏
𝓏\1D4CFCodes and encoding1 code points
A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
