What 𝐅 means
It marks a distinct mathematical symbol; context defines its role.
The bold style lets a formula distinguish this F from plain or differently styled letters. Authors assign symbols to quantities, so bold F has no fixed meaning by itself; the surrounding notation tells you what it stands for.
In LaTeX, a math typesetting system, \mathbf{F} produces the styled form in math mode. Unicode added mathematical alphabets in 2001 so plain-text formulas could preserve style distinctions. Its wider math collection later mapped older publishing standards, including ISO/IEC TR 9573-13, a 1991 catalog of named mathematical and scientific symbols.
Is 𝐅 just formatting on F?
No. It is a separate Unicode character, not formatting on F.
In equations, a separate character preserves distinctions that depend on a letter's style. In ordinary prose, bold-format regular Latin capital F instead; Unicode advises against using mathematical letters as general styling because they can cause problems with search, restyling, and assistive technology.
Why can 𝐅 turn into plain F?
NFKC normalization maps it to ordinary F.
NFKC is Unicode's compatibility form for standardizing text. It maps mathematical alphanumeric characters to base Latin or Greek letters, so 𝐅 can become F and lose a distinction an equation relies on.
In mathematical or technical notation, its style can distinguish a symbol.
Avoid 𝐅 for prose that needs to search, restyle, or work with assistive technology; it remains a separate character.

1Why does 𝐅 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
