What 𝐟 means
The formula’s notation decides.
If you’re reading vector f, check the notation key; other fields assign bold letters different roles.
Why was bold f encoded separately?
Math notation uses weight to distinguish symbols. Mathematician E. B. Wilson’s 1901 textbook used bold for vectors and ordinary type for scalars. In 1999, Unicode proposed expanding earlier math-like letters into full alphabets so those meanings could survive in plain text.
Made for mathematical notation, where bold weight can carry meaning.
Don’t assume bold f means a vector.

1Why does 𝐟 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
