What 𝐝 means
It is a bold d; the formula gives it a particular role.
Unicode's earlier section for special letter-shaped symbols already contained a few styled letters; the 2001 expansion filled out whole mathematical alphabets. That gave plain-text formulas a way to keep meaningful style differences between letters.
In physics and applied mathematics, bold lowercase letters commonly stand for vectors. So 𝐝 can be a vector name when that convention is in play, but it does not mean “vector” on its own.
Why use 𝐝 in a plain-text post?
It is a Unicode letter, not a font setting.
Changing ordinary d to bold in a rich-text editor gives the same letter in a different font style, not this character. The distinction travels with 𝐝 in plain text; NFKC or NFKD normalization can fold it back to d, which can erase a mathematical distinction.
As of 2026, Unicode notes that people use mathematical alphabets playfully or as a workaround on social platforms that lack styled text.
In a formula it can mark a bold mathematical variable; elsewhere it can read as visual styling.
A bold d is not automatically a vector; the notation decides.

1Questions people ask
1Will 𝐝 look the same in every font?
No. Unicode encodes a mathematical bold style, but the font that renders it chooses the actual letter shape.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
