What 𝐈 means
It is a bold mathematical version of the capital I. In an equation, bold can distinguish this letter from plain or italic I; the formula tells you what it stands for.
The style belongs to a separate character, not formatting applied to a stretch of ordinary text. The mathematical alphabet expanded an older, smaller set of encoded letterlike math symbols so plain-text formulas could retain distinctions that change an equation's reading.
Why does 𝐈 sometimes turn into I?
Compatibility normalization can remove its mathematical bold style. NFKC, a Unicode compatibility-normalization form, changes 𝐈 to ordinary I. A search or text comparison that uses NFKC may match them, but that conversion also loses the mathematical distinction.
Mathematical in equations; playful as a plain-text style outside them.
Avoid it in security-sensitive identifiers: it can be mistaken for ordinary I.

Your font may not include its glyph. Mathematical characters can be missing from one font or drawn differently in another; a fallback font may supply a generic mark.
