What 𝓎 means
Use 𝓎 in HTML or \mscry with New Computer Modern.
The HTML reference works in source where numeric character references are parsed. That LaTeX command is specific to New Computer Modern in math mode.
What does 𝓎 mean in math?
Its value comes from the formula or the author’s definition.
Unicode—the shared standard that assigns text characters stable identities—encoded mathematical script alphabets because math and technical books already used distinct letter styles to keep symbols apart. Those styles can carry different meanings across fields, so the surrounding formula or the author’s definition controls what this y represents.
In formulas, script styling can distinguish symbols; in prose, it can be decorative.
Don’t replace 𝓎 with plain y when the formula distinguishes them.

1Questions people ask
2Why does 𝓎 look different in different fonts?
Unicode defines its mathematical script style, not one exact drawing. Mathematical fonts can use different script letterforms, so the shape may vary while the character stays the same.
Why can 𝓎 turn into plain y?
When text is processed with NFKC, Unicode’s compatibility-normalization form, 𝓎 becomes plain y; this can collapse two distinct symbols in a formula.
