Mathematical Script Small W

To type 𝓌, enter <code>1D4CC</code> and press <code>Alt+X</code> in Word for Windows; on GNOME, press <code>Ctrl+Shift+U</code>, enter the code, then <code>Enter</code> (checked in September 2026). 𝓌 is a lowercase Latin w in mathematical script; in formulas, the style can distinguish it from plain w. Compatibility normalization can flatten it to plain w.

What does script w mean in a formula?

It marks a distinct mathematical letter, not a fixed value.

Here, script means a calligraphic, handwriting-inspired letter style. In formulas, writers use styles to distinguish letter-like symbols, but 𝓌 has no universal value; the equation or a nearby definition tells you what it names. In the late 1990s, scientific publishers proposed encoding mathematical alphabets so formulas could carry their symbol distinctions through text and between publishing systems. The exact calligraphic drawing still varies by math font.

Mathematical notation first; in running text it behaves as a distinct letter, not a font setting.

For an ordinary word, use plain w with font styling instead of a “fancy w”; Unicode math letters can disrupt searching and other text processing.

1

Why does 𝓌 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
