What 𝚣 means
In formulas, its style can mark a distinct variable. An ordinary Latin z and a monospace mathematical z can stand for different quantities. MathML, a markup language for formulas, could request monospace before Unicode encoded this text character in 2001, letting plain text preserve that distinction.
Why does 𝚣 turn into plain z?
Text processing can remove its mathematical style. Compatibility normalization, called NFKC or NFKD, folds styled letters to their base characters; here it turns 𝚣 into plain z. In a formula, that can erase a distinction between variables.
Does 𝚣 look the same in every font?
No; fonts supply the exact drawing. The reference-chart glyph is an example, not a required design; a math font can draw this monospace letter differently.
