What monospace text is
In a monospaced typeface every character is the same width: a narrow i takes exactly as much room as a wide m, so letters line up in columns like the keys of a typewriter struck one step at a time. The characters on this page, ๐ฐ ๐ฑ ๐ฒ, ๐ ๐ ๐, ๐ถ ๐ท ๐ธ, are the Unicode alphabet that carries that look as text itself, which is why generators call it monospace text, mono text, typewriter text or the typewriter font.
Officially they are the mathematical monospace letters of the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, added in Unicode 3.1 in 2001 together with the bold, italic, script, Fraktur, double-struck and sans-serif alphabets. The capitals run from U+1D670 to U+1D689, the small letters from U+1D68A to U+1D6A3, and the ten digits sit at the very end of the block, U+1D7F6 to U+1D7FF. Unicode encoded them for mathematical and technical typesetting, where typewriter letters mark program code and keywords inside a formula, not for bios; but because each one is a separate character, it goes wherever plain text goes.
Unlike the italic alphabet (where h is the older โ) or the double-struck one (โ โ โ โ โ โ โค live elsewhere), the monospace alphabet is complete and in one piece: 26 capitals, 26 small letters, 10 digits, no gaps and no borrowed look-alikes. That is all there is, though: Unicode has no monospace space, comma, full stop or bracket, so punctuation in a monospace sentence stays ordinary, as in ๐๐๐๐๐, ๐ ๐๐๐๐. For other letter styles see Bold Letters (Bold Text), Italic Letters (Italic Text), Sans-Serif Letters and Fullwidth Text (Vaporwave Letters), and for the whole menu Letter Emoji & Alphabet Symbols.
Monospace text vs code formatting on Discord, WhatsApp and Slack
Chat apps already have a monospace mode, and it is a different thing. On Discord, Slack, Telegram and GitHub, wrapping a word in backticks, , shows it in the app's own code font on a grey box, and three backticks make a whole block; on WhatsApp the same is done with three backticks around the text, like this``. That is formatting: the letters underneath are still plain a, b, c, and the look exists only inside that app. Copy the message into a username, an Instagram bio, a tweet or a text message and the monospace is gone.like this``
The characters on this page are the opposite: ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ is monospace in the characters themselves, so it stays monospace in a Discord display name, a Twitch or Steam name, a TikTok bio, an X post, a YouTube comment or a Google Doc, none of which let you mark text as code. Use backtick formatting for an actual command or snippet in a chat, where people may want to copy the plain text back out; use these letters for a name, a headline or a bio line that should keep the typewriter look everywhere. A Discord message can even mix both: a backticked command in the body and a monospace nickname above it. More on that app's own tricks in Discord Symbols.
Where the typewriter font works, and its pitfalls
The letters show correctly in current iOS, Android, Windows, macOS and Linux, in browsers and in the big apps, because the system falls back to a maths font that covers the block (Cambria Math on Windows, STIX and the Apple system fonts on Apple devices, Noto Sans Math on Android). Each app draws them in whatever font it has, so the exact shape varies: on one phone the typewriter letters look like Courier, on another like a coding font, and in a very old app or a cheap smart TV they can turn into boxes.
Three practical limits. First, length: every monospace letter lives outside the Basic Multilingual Plane, so it takes four bytes in UTF-8 and two code units in UTF-16, and X counts each one as two of a post's 280 characters, while a 30-character Instagram name holds fewer typewriter letters than plain ones. Second, search and matching: a name written as ๐ฝ๐๐๐ will not be found by someone searching for Nina, and a form that checks for letters only may reject it. Third, accessibility: a screen reader such as VoiceOver or NVDA may read ๐ฑ๐๐๐ aloud as 'mathematical monospace capital B, mathematical monospace small o โฆ' or skip it, so a long bio in this style is hard going for blind readers. Keep it to a name or a single line, and put anything important in plain text.
The typewriter behind the look
Monospacing is a typewriter habit. The Sholes and Glidden machine that Remington began selling in 1874 moved its carriage one fixed step for every key, so the thin letters got as much room as the wide ones; pica machines fitted ten characters to the inch and elite twelve. The typewriter face everyone recognises, Courier, was drawn by Howard Kettler for IBM in 1955, and because IBM did not keep it exclusive, other makers adopted it and it became the standard look of letters, manuscripts and film scripts. Courier New shipped with Windows 3.1 in 1992 and carried the look onto screens.
Programmers kept the equal widths because code is read in columns: indentation, aligned assignments and tables of numbers only work when every character is the same width. Terminals, editors and chat 'code blocks' all use monospace faces such as Consolas, Menlo, Fira Code and JetBrains Mono, which is why the monospace letters also read as a hacker or terminal aesthetic, the text equivalent of the glowing green screen. That double heritage is what people reach for: the writer's typewriter and the developer's terminal, in one alphabet.
How to type or generate monospace text
The quick way is to tap a letter in the grid to copy it, or copy a whole phrase from the combos below. For anything longer, a monospace text generator does the same conversion automatically, and the rule behind it is simple: each capital sits 0x1D670 minus 0x41 code points above its plain letter, so a one-line script turns any text into typewriter text. In Microsoft Word, type the hex code and press Alt X: 1D670 then Alt X gives ๐ฐ. On a Mac, the Character Viewer (Ctrl Cmd Space) finds them under 'monospace'.
In LaTeX, monospace is a command rather than a character: \texttt{...} in running text and \mathtt{...} in a formula; with the unicode-math package the characters on this page map straight onto \mathtt. On a web page, CSS font-family: monospace or a <code> tag is the right tool, and these Unicode letters are for the places where no such tool exists.

15Worth knowing
- The monospace digits ๐ถ to ๐ฟ are the last ten code points of the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, U1D7F6 to U1D7FF; nothing in Unicode's maths alphabets comes after them.
- Unicode has monospace letters and digits but no monospace space, comma or bracket, so a 'monospace' sentence pasted into a bio is really typewriter letters with ordinary punctuation between them.
- X counts each monospace letter as two characters, so a post written entirely in typewriter text holds only 140 of them, half the usual 280.
- Courier, the archetypal typewriter face, was designed for IBM in 1955 by Howard Kettler, and the US State Department typed its documents in Courier New until 2004, when it switched to Times New Roman.
- The Sholes and Glidden typewriter of 1874, the first commercial success, typed capitals only; the shift key that added small letters came with the Remington No. 2 in 1878.
Questions people ask
8How do I copy and paste monospace text?
Tap any letter in the grid above to copy it, or copy a ready phrase such as ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐ from the combos, then paste it with Ctrl V, Cmd V or long-press and Paste. For a longer text, type it in a monospace text generator, which swaps each letter for its monospace twin.
What is monospace text?
Text in which every character has the same width, like a typewriter's. Here it means the Unicode mathematical monospace letters ๐ฐโ๐, ๐โ๐ฃ and ๐ถโ๐ฟ, which carry that look as characters, so it survives anywhere plain text does.
How do I make monospace text on Discord?
Wrap a word in single backticks for inline code, or in triple backticks for a block; that is Discord's own formatting and shows only inside Discord. For a monospace display name or nickname, which has no formatting, paste the characters from this page, for example ๐๐๐๐ข๐๐_๐๐๐.
How do I write monospace text on WhatsApp?
Put three backticks before and after the text: your text. WhatsApp shows it in a monospace font, but only within WhatsApp. To send typewriter letters that stay monospace when forwarded or copied elsewhere, paste the characters themselves, such as ๐ข๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ก๐.
Is there a typewriter font I can copy and paste?
Yes: the 62 characters on this page are the closest thing to a typewriter font that works as plain text, since you cannot install a font into an Instagram bio or a username. Every app draws them in its own monospace or maths font, so they look like Courier in one place and like a coding font in another.
Does monospace text work on Instagram and TikTok?
Yes, in bios, captions, comments and display names on current phones. Two limits: each letter counts more towards the length limit than a plain one, and a name written in monospace letters will not come up when someone searches for the plain spelling.
How do I type monospace text in LaTeX?
Use \texttt{...} in running text and \mathtt{...} inside a formula. With the unicode-math package the Unicode monospace characters from this page map directly to \mathtt, so you can paste them into a formula as well.
Can screen readers read monospace letters?
Not well. A screen reader may announce each character's full name, 'mathematical monospace small a', or skip the word, so people who rely on VoiceOver, TalkBack or NVDA may miss a bio written this way. Keep it to a short name or one line and put the information that matters in plain text.
