Italic Letters (Italic Text)

Italic text that survives copy and paste: ๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘–๐‘, ๐’ƒ๐’๐’๐’… ๐’Š๐’•๐’‚๐’๐’Š๐’„, ๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ด-๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ง ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ค and ๐™จ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™จ-๐™จ๐™š๐™ง๐™ž๐™› ๐™—๐™ค๐™ก๐™™ ๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ก๐™ž๐™˜, every capital and small letter from A to Z in all four styles, ready for an Instagram bio, a Discord name or an X post where no italic button exists. Below is how these Unicode letters work, why the italic h is the odd one out (โ„Ž), where they display and where they break, and how to make text italic the ordinary way in WhatsApp, Discord, HTML and LaTeX.

Italic text with Unicode: what these letters are

An ordinary italic is a style a font applies to normal letters, and it vanishes the moment you paste the text somewhere that has no italic button: an Instagram caption, a TikTok bio, a YouTube comment, an X post. The letters on this page are different. ๐ธ๐‘Ž๐‘โ„Ž ๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘’ ๐‘–๐‘  ๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘  ๐‘œ๐‘ค๐‘› ๐‘โ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘Ÿ: ๐ด is not an A drawn slanted, it is U+1D434, a separate code point that any font with maths support draws as an italic A. Because the slant lives in the character itself, it travels wherever the text goes.

They come from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, added in Unicode 3.1 in 2001 so that mathematicians could keep ๐ด, ๐‘จ, ๐€ and ๐”ธ apart as different variables in plain text. Unicode is clear that they exist for that purpose and not for styling prose, which is why they behave oddly in places that expect normal letters (more on that below). Social media simply adopted them as the only italics that paste anywhere.

This page is the dedicated set for the four slanted alphabets. The upright styles have pages of their own: Bold Letters for ๐€๐๐‚ and the bold digits ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘, Cursive Letters for the looping script ๐’œโ„ฌ๐’ž that people often call italic but Unicode calls script, Sans-Serif Letters for ๐– ๐–ก๐–ข, and Letter Emoji & Alphabet Symbols for the whole zoo of fancy letters at once.

The four italic alphabets, and the hole at h

Italic ๐ด๐‘Ž is the serif italic of a book: ๐ด ๐ต ๐ถ and ๐‘Ž ๐‘ ๐‘, the one that reads as a real italic in running text and as a variable in a formula (๐‘ฅ, ๐‘“(๐‘ฅ), ๐ธ ๐‘š๐‘ยฒ). Bold italic ๐‘จ๐’‚ is the same shape with more weight, ๐‘จ ๐‘ฉ ๐‘ช ๐’‚ ๐’ƒ ๐’„, and reads loudest in a feed. Sans-serif italic ๐˜ˆ๐˜ข drops the serifs, ๐˜ˆ ๐˜‰ ๐˜Š ๐˜ข ๐˜ฃ ๐˜ค, for a cleaner, more modern slant, and sans-serif bold italic ๐˜ผ๐™– is its heavy form, ๐˜ผ ๐˜ฝ ๐˜พ ๐™– ๐™— ๐™˜, the closest thing to a headline.

Each alphabet has 26 capitals and 26 small letters, 52 characters, with one famous exception. The slot where the italic small h should sit, U+1D455, is permanently empty, because Unicode already had an italic h before the maths alphabets arrived: โ„Ž, the Planck constant sign, U+210E. Unicode never encodes the same letter twice, so โ„Ž is the italic h, and it sits in its alphabet position in the grid above. A generator that gets this wrong leaves an upright h in the middle of a word: โ„Ž๐‘’๐‘™๐‘™๐‘œ is right, h๐‘’๐‘™๐‘™๐‘œ is the tell-tale of a careless converter. The other three italic alphabets have no such gap.

A few relatives belong beside them. โ„ is the h with a bar, the reduced Planck constant, drawn as an italic h with a stroke. ๐šค and ๐šฅ are the italic dotless i and j, made so that a hat or a bar can sit on the letter without colliding with the dot. Italic Greek exists too (๐›ผ ๐›ฝ ๐›พ, bold ๐œถ ๐œท ๐œธ), for the Greek variables of physics; it lives on Greek Letters. And there are no italic digits at all in Unicode: bold ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘, sans-serif ๐Ÿฃ๐Ÿค๐Ÿฅ, monospace ๐Ÿท๐Ÿธ๐Ÿน and double-struck ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿš๐Ÿ› exist, italic ones do not, so italic text with numbers always mixes in plain or bold digits.

Where italic text works: Instagram, WhatsApp, Discord, X

Instagram, TikTok, X, Threads, YouTube, LinkedIn and Facebook offer no italic formatting in bios, names, captions or comments, so these characters are the only way to get ๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘ฅ๐‘ก there, and they show correctly on current iPhones, Android phones and desktop browsers. Usernames are the exception: Instagram handles, X handles and Discord usernames accept only plain letters, digits and a few signs, so the italic letters work in the display name and the bio, not in the @handle.

Messaging apps have their own italic markup and it is the better tool there. In WhatsApp, put an underscore on each side of the text, like _this_, and it sends in true italics; asterisks make bold and tildes strike through. Discord, Reddit and most Markdown editors use a single asterisk or underscore, this or _this_, and three asterisks for bold italic. Telegram uses two underscores, __this__, or the formatting menu after selecting text, and Slack uses underscores. Real italics are readable by everyone and searchable; the Unicode letters are for the places that have nothing else, and for names and statuses where markup is not applied.

Three honest drawbacks. Screen readers, VoiceOver and TalkBack included, may read โ„Ž๐‘– as "mathematical italic small h i", letter by letter, or skip it, so a bio written entirely in italic letters is hard going for blind readers; keep it to a name or a short phrase. Search and find-in-page do not match them to normal words, although Unicode compatibility normalisation (NFKC) maps every one of them back to its plain letter, so some systems silently treat them as ordinary text. And each of these letters lies outside the first Unicode plane, so X counts it as two characters against the 280 limit, and very old devices and some fonts show boxes or question marks instead.

How to type italic text: markup, HTML, CSS, LaTeX and generators

Where a real italic exists, use it: CtrlI (CmdI on a Mac) in Word, Google Docs, Gmail and most editors; _underscores_ in WhatsApp; asterisks in Discord, Reddit and Markdown. On the web, wrap the text in an em element for emphasis or an i element for a title or a foreign word, or give any element the CSS rule font-style: italic. In LaTeX, \textit{text} sets italic prose and \emph{text} emphasis, while single-letter variables in maths mode come out italic by themselves; \mathit forces it for a whole word.

For the Unicode letters, the quickest way is to tap them here or copy a ready phrase from the combos below. In Microsoft Word you can type the code and press AltX: 1D434 then AltX gives ๐ด. A generator or a script does it with arithmetic, because each alphabet keeps the ASCII order: the capitals start at U+1D434 for italic, U+1D468 for bold italic, U+1D608 for sans-serif italic and U+1D63C for sans-serif bold italic, with the small letters 26 places later, and the single special case h โ„Ž.

Mixing styles is part of the look. A bold italic word inside an italic sentence gives real emphasis, ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐’๐’๐’† ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘–๐‘›๐‘”, and a sans-serif bold italic headline above a plain bio reads like a title. Keep the fancy letters short and the rest plain, and the page stays readable for everyone.

How to use them

6 situationsClick to copy
Styling an Instagram or TikTok bio
One italic line such as ๐‘‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘š๐‘’๐‘Ÿ, ๐‘๐‘œ๐‘“๐‘“๐‘’๐‘’, ๐‘๐‘œ๐‘œ๐‘˜๐‘  or a name like ๐‘ณ๐’–๐’๐’‚ stands out; keep the rest plain so people can read it, and remember the @handle itself must stay in normal letters.
Posting on X or Threads with emphasis
Italicise the one word that carries the stress: I ๐‘“๐‘–๐‘›๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘™๐‘ฆ finished it. Each italic letter counts as two characters on X, so use it sparingly.
Messaging in WhatsApp, Discord or Telegram
Use the app's own markup, _text_ in WhatsApp, text in Discord, __text__ in Telegram; it is searchable and read aloud correctly. Save the Unicode letters for your display name or status.
Naming a book, film or album in plain text
Titles are set in italics by convention, and the Unicode letters bring that to a YouTube description or a Letterboxd bio: currently reading ๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐ป๐‘œ๐‘๐‘๐‘–๐‘ก, listening to ๐‘…๐‘ข๐‘š๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘Ÿ๐‘ .
Writing maths or physics in a chat
This is what the letters were made for: variables are italic, so ๐ธ ๐‘š๐‘ยฒ, ๐‘“(๐‘ฅ) 2๐‘ฅ 1 and โ„Ž for the Planck constant look exactly as they do in a textbook.
Choosing a gaming or Discord display name
Sans-serif bold italic reads fast and heavy at small sizes: ๐™‰๐™ค๐™ซ๐™–, ๐™‚๐™ƒ๐™Š๐™Ž๐™, ๐˜ด๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ. It goes in the display name and nickname, not the login username.

Worth knowing

  • Italic type was first cut in Venice around 1500 by the punchcutter Francesco Griffo for the printer Aldus Manutius, modelled on the slanted chancery handwriting of Italian scribes; it is called italic because it came from Italy.
  • The code point where the italic small h should be, U1D455, will stay empty forever: Unicode had already encoded โ„Ž as the Planck constant sign, and it never encodes the same letter twice.
  • Unicode has bold, sans-serif, monospace and double-struck digits but no italic digits, so there is no way to write an italic 2026 with these letters.
  • Compatibility normalisation (NFKC) maps every italic letter back to its plain twin, so a system that normalises text sees ๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘–๐‘ and italic as the same word.
  • X counts each of these letters as two characters because they sit outside the Basic Multilingual Plane, so an all-italic post hits the 280-character limit at about 140 letters.

Questions people ask

8

How do I copy and paste italic text?

Tap any italic letter in the grid to copy it, or copy a ready phrase from the combos, then paste with CtrlV, CmdV, or long-press and Paste on a phone.

How do I make text italic on Instagram?

Instagram has no italic button, so paste Unicode italic letters from this page into your name, bio or caption: ๐‘™๐‘–๐‘˜๐‘’ ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘–๐‘  or ๐’๐’Š๐’Œ๐’† ๐’•๐’‰๐’Š๐’”. The @username has to stay in plain letters.

How do I make text italic in WhatsApp?

Type an underscore before and after the words, _like this_, and WhatsApp sends them in italics. Asterisks give bold, tildes strike through, and three backticks give monospace. The Unicode italic letters here work in your name and About text, where markup does not apply.

How do I make text italic in Discord?

Put one asterisk or underscore on each side, like this or _like this_. Two asterisks make bold and three make bold italic. For an italic display name or nickname, use the Unicode letters on this page.

Why is the italic h different from the other letters?

Unicode already had an italic h before the maths alphabets were added: โ„Ž, the Planck constant sign . Rather than encode it twice, Unicode left the slot for italic h empty, so โ„Ž is the italic h and belongs in the alphabet with ๐‘Ž ๐‘ ๐‘.

Are italic letters a font?

No. Each letter here is its own Unicode character from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, which is why it keeps its slant when pasted into a bio or a post. A normal italic is a style applied by a font and is lost on paste.

How do I make text italic in HTML and CSS?

Wrap the text in an em element for emphasis or an i element for a title or foreign word, or set the CSS rule font-style: italic on any element. In Markdown use asterisks or _underscores_, and in LaTeX \textit{} or \emph{}.

Does italic text work everywhere?

It displays on current phones and browsers, but very old devices may show boxes. Screen readers read the letters as "mathematical italic small a" or skip them, search does not match them to normal words, and X counts each letter as two characters, so use them for short phrases.
