What 𝐽 means
An italic capital J used as a math letter. Its value comes from the formula; the italic alphabet lets style distinguish individual symbols. In 2001, Unicode expanded a smaller set of mathematical letterlike signs into fuller alphabets. For formatted equations, software can italicize plain J instead. As of 2026, these letters also appear as playful styling in posts without rich-text formatting. A font without 𝐽 may show a box.

1Why does 𝐽 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
