What 𝑆 means
It is a Latin capital S used as a mathematical variable. In a formula, italics usually mark a quantity or variable—a letter whose value the formula defines—and the surrounding notation tells you which one this S names. It has no fixed meaning by itself.
The variable convention is much older than this encoded character. The Greek algebraist Diophantus, active around 250–275, used a Greek letter marked with an accent for an unknown; by 1637, the French mathematician René Descartes used Latin letters for known and unknown quantities in his algebra book La Géométrie (Geometry). Today's math-italic style distinguishes variables visually, and Unicode, the standard that assigns characters to digital text, lets plain text preserve that style as a distinct character.
The exact slant and stroke design can vary by math font; Unicode's chart glyph is an example, not a required drawing.
A mathematical variable glyph; outside formulas, it signals deliberate math styling.
Mathematical italic S in ordinary text can disrupt search and text processing because it is a different character from plain S.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𝑆 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
