What 𝐒 means
The formula decides its role; boldness marks a distinction. Some conventions use bold capitals for vectors (directed quantities) or matrices (arrays of values).
In 1881, J. Willard Gibbs used Greek letters for vectors and Latin letters for scalars (single values). E. B. Wilson's 1901 textbook used Clarendon, a heavy typeface, to distinguish vectors from scalars. In 1921, Hermann Weyl used bold x for a vector and x with a small subscript for one component.
Unicode encodes math-bold letters separately so ordinary-text formulas can retain meaning-changing distinctions.
Mathematical and technical; boldness can distinguish one variable from another.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𝐒 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
