What 𝒏 means
On GNOME/GTK Linux, use Unicode hex input. As of 2026, press CtrlShiftU, type 1D48F, then press Enter or Space.
What does bold italic n mean?
It is the mathematical letter n in bold italics. The equation tells you what quantity it names. Descartes’s 1637 geometry book, La Géométrie, used italic lowercase letters for unknowns. For vectors—quantities with direction and size—Maxwell tried German blackletter in 1873; Heaviside used bold type in 1886 to distinguish them from single-value scalars. Unicode gave mathematical styles separate text characters in 2001 so plain-text formulas could preserve them. One international notation standard (ISO) uses bold italics for vectors; other formulas may follow different conventions.
Why does 𝒏 turn into plain n?
Compatibility normalization can strip its mathematical style. NFKC and NFKD are text-cleanup forms that fold mathematical alphabet characters into plain Latin or Greek letters, so 𝒏 becomes n. Unicode warns that this can erase distinctions in mathematical text; preserve the styled character when that distinction matters.
Technical and notation-specific: the style can mark a math distinction, but the equation defines n.
In formulas, replacing 𝒏 with plain n can merge two distinct variables.

1Why does 𝒏 show as a box?
A missing glyph is the likely cause. As of 2026, math-font coverage still varies: a font may show a box for 𝒏 or draw it differently. Try a font that includes mathematical symbols.
