Fullwidth Latin Small Letter N

78/225

n is ordinary lowercase Latin n in a full-width form: its letter value and sound stay the same, but its spacing and character identity differ. It fits East Asian text when Latin letters need to align with full-cell characters, and an input method can convert whole runs. A lone n inside an English word reads as deliberate styling or an input slip.

What n means

It is lowercase Latin n set in a full-width cell. Unicode pairs it with ordinary lowercase n for text-layout compatibility: the letter value and sound stay the same, but the spacing and character identity differ.

This form served East Asian computer text. Japanese character standard JIS X 0201 (1969) provided a one-byte Roman character set; JIS X 0208 (1978) arranged Japanese characters, including Latin letters, in a 9494 grid. Mixed-width encodings such as Shift JIS kept narrow and full-cell forms so Latin could align with square East Asian cells and older text could convert between systems.

In Japanese text with kanji or kana, n can fit the character grid, including vertical layouts. It remains the Latin letter n; the wider form changes its spacing, not how it is read.

How do I type fullwidth n?

Choose a full-width alphanumeric input mode. Microsoft Japanese IME uses F9 to convert selected text to full-width alphanumeric and F10 to return it to half-width.

Japanese keyboards may also have Hankaku/Zenkaku keys or other input-method controls for switching widths; names vary by layout. Select a whole word when you want all its Latin letters in full-width form.

In East Asian fixed-pitch text, n behaves like a full cell. Its actual screen width depends on the font and layout, so it may not look exactly twice as wide as ordinary n.

Neutral as data; in Latin prose, a lone n draws attention to its spacing rather than changing the letter's sound.

Avoid it in passwords or identifiers unless you intend a distinct character.

Drift: In the early 2010s, vaporwave reused fullwidth Latin letters for spaced, retro display lettering.

Does Unicode normalize n to n?

Compatibility normalization maps n to ordinary n. Software that compares exact characters before normalization can still distinguish them.

Does n always take two columns?

No. In East Asian fixed-pitch text it behaves like a full cell, but the font and layout determine its actual on-screen width.
