What m means
It is m with a fullwidth spacing role.
The letter is still m; the difference is spacing. In mixed-width East Asian text, Latin letters could take the same two-cell grid as CJK characters. This fullwidth form grew out of older single-byte and double-byte encoding systems and was carried into Unicode so text could retain that width choice when exchanged between systems.
It belongs to the same compatibility toolkit as fullwidth punctuation and halfwidth kana. “Fullwidth” describes its layout role, not a guaranteed pixel measurement: fonts and layout determine the visible width.
How do I type m?
Use a Japanese IME’s full-width alphanumeric conversion.
In Japanese input mode, type m and choose the full-width alphanumeric candidate. On Windows, F9 is a documented conversion shortcut; a December 2025 Tokyo guide also describes full-width selection routes for Macs and smartphones. The exact controls depend on the input method.
Technical and format-sensitive: it signals a width choice, not a different pronunciation or a special mood.
Can m fail in forms? Yes—an ASCII-only field may reject it even when it looks like m.

1Does fullwidth m normalize to m?
Yes. Compatibility normalization such as NFKC or NFKD converts it to ordinary m. That helps with loose matching, but removes the distinction when exact width or round-trip presentation matters.
