Fullwidth Latin Small Letter L

76/225

l is a wide l: the same lowercase Latin letter as ordinary l, set in a full-width cell, so its width changes layout, not sound or meaning. It belongs to East Asian mixed-script grid conventions; later, wide text took on a retro look in vaporwave-derived lofi culture. Forms and identifiers may distinguish it from ordinary l.

Text symbol

What l means

It is the lowercase Latin l set in a full-width cell. The width changes layout, not the letter's pronunciation or basic meaning.

Japanese computer character standards included full-width Roman letters alongside narrower forms. JIS C 6226-1978, established in January 1978, helped mixed Japanese and Latin text fit grid-based layouts and convert between character sets.

Unicode keeps l as a compatibility form of ordinary l, preserving mappings to older standards such as JIS X 0208. Half-width kana are another width-based form in East Asian text; similar width conventions also appear in Chinese and Korean computing.

Is l used in vaporwave text?

Yes; it can give text a retro-digital look. By 2024, research on YouTube lofi culture documented full-width characters as an aesthetic convention derived from online vaporwave. A run of wide letters can create that effect; a single l may simply be an intentional width choice.

For ordinary Latin text, l is the standard form. Use l when a Japanese input task requests zenkaku, or when the wide styling is intentional.

How do I type l?

Choose Full-width Alphanumeric in a Japanese IME. As of 2026-09-14, Microsoft's Japanese IME lists Shift + NonConvert for this mode; some Japanese keyboards use Shift + ImeOff (A).

A Japanese IME (input method editor) converts keystrokes into text. Switch it to full-width alphanumeric or zenkaku mode, type l, then choose the wide candidate.

Neutral as a letter; outside East Asian text, its width can look like deliberate styling or a mismatch.

In a login or password, a visually similar l may not be interchangeable.
