What l means
Usually the letter; a loss reading needs context. A small l inside a word or username is ordinary spelling. If someone sends it alone, don't assume a put-down just because you know the slang L.
In English slang, “take the L” means accept a loss: said about yourself, it concedes defeat; aimed at you, it can be a taunt. “L ratio” mocks a social-media post. The phrase supplies the clue, not the letter alone.
Why does l look like I or 1?
Some fonts give these characters nearly identical shapes. Lowercase l and capital I can both appear as a plain vertical stroke; the digit 1 can also be hard to tell apart at small sizes.
For a code you must enter exactly, view it in a font with more distinctive letterforms, or ask the sender to name the doubtful character. Surrounding words help in ordinary text; a random password gives you fewer clues.
The letter is neutral; a loss-themed reply to someone else's failure can sound dismissive rather than playful.
A lone lowercase l is not enough to conclude someone is mocking you.

1Why does l show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
