What means
Al is the Ol Onal consonant for /l/. Its sound is like the “l” in “leaf.” It is written as its own consonant and carries no built-in vowel.
How was Ol Onal chosen for Bhumij?
Three designs went to a community contest. Mahendra Nath Sardar developed Ol Onal between 1981–1992; in 1992, Adim Bhumij Samaj chose his design. The original alphabet also included lowercase forms called Galang Onal, but teaching and print used uppercase Ol Onal alone.
By 2022, Ol Onal appeared in teaching and books, ritual writing, banners, inscriptions, wedding invitations and wall paintings.

Questions people ask
1Why does old Ol Onal text look like Latin letters?
Some early fonts did. Fonts from 2013–2014 reused the character codes assigned to Latin letters, so text could show Latin letters unless the matching font was installed.
