What 𝓁 means
No fixed meaning; the formula defines it. Mathematical script letters let writers distinguish styled versions of the same letter in formulas; here, the cursive shape marks the script form of l. It can name any object or quantity the writer defines. In Word for Windows, type 1D4C1 and press Alt+X to enter it (as of 2026).
Why is 𝓁 different from ℓ?
They are distinct letter forms. The wider mathematical alphabet grew from a standards effort involving the STIX Project, a publisher group seeking complete math fonts and easier exchange of scientific documents (2000). In 2002, a proposal pointed out a gap: ℓ had been treated as the script small l, but it is a special italic ell. That proposal also records ℓ as a liter symbol in some contexts and as a mark for leaves in bibliographic records. 𝓁 filled the missing regular script slot.
Why does 𝓁 change shape or become plain l?
Fonts can simplify it, and normalization can erase its style. Unicode permits less elaborate script glyphs when they remain distinct from upright and italic letters, so the flourish can vary by font. NFKC, a form of text normalization that folds styling variants into their base letters, can turn 𝓁 into plain l. If that distinction matters, use software that preserves mathematical characters.
