What 𝓂 means
The formula assigns its role; the script style helps distinguish it. A script m can name one quantity while ordinary or italic m names another. There is no fixed value attached to this shape; the surrounding notation tells you how to read it.
Unicode 3.1 added 𝓂 in 2001 as one of its mathematical alphabets. That date marks its computer encoding; the separate character lets plain-text formulas preserve a letter-style distinction.
Why can 𝓂 turn into plain m?
NFKC can fold its script style back to plain m. NFKC is a text-normalization step that maps 𝓂 to ordinary Latin m. This removes the style distinction, so avoid applying NFKC to formulas where letter style carries meaning.
In formulas, script style marks mathematical notation; in prose, 𝓂 reads as deliberately styled lettering.
Use plain m in searchable words, names, or code: NFKC normalization can erase the script distinction.

1Why does 𝓂 look different in different fonts?
Unicode defines the script style but not one exact typeface drawing. Fonts can therefore give 𝓂 noticeably different handwritten or calligraphic shapes.
