What 𝓀 means
A styled k that takes its meaning from the formula around it.
Mathematicians use letter styles to keep different symbols distinct: plain k and script 𝓀 can name different quantities in one expression. The style alone does not tell you what that quantity is.
Why is script k a separate character?
So the distinction can survive plain text.
In 1998, the Scientific and Technical Information Exchange (STIX), a project involving scientific and technical publishers, proposed encoding mathematical alphabets. Publishers already used letter styles to distinguish meanings, and plain text needed to retain that difference. The proposal extended an existing notation toolkit; it did not give k a new universal definition.
Why can 𝓀 look different across fonts?
The code sets the style; each font draws its own version.
Mathematical script forms vary across fonts, and lowercase script k has no separate Unicode variant for choosing a handwriting style. A text-cleanup step called compatibility normalization can treat styled forms as equivalent and turn 𝓀 into plain k, erasing the distinction.
In a formula, its style marks a deliberate mathematical distinction; in an ordinary word, it is a typographic effect.
Can I use 𝓀 in normal text? Yes, but styled words can be harder to search, restyle for accessibility, or process.

1Why does 𝓀 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
