What 𝓴 means
It marks a bold-script k in mathematical notation. A variable is a letter that stands for a quantity or object. The exact variable depends on the formula, so this character has no field-independent definition.
Why was 𝓴 encoded for math?
The alphabet was encoded to preserve distinctions in mathematical text. Changing a letter’s style can change which mathematical symbol it denotes, so bold script is more than visual emphasis.
STIX, a project to develop math fonts for scientific and technical publishing, was proposed in 1995. The American Mathematical Society joined the publisher group and sponsored a Unicode submission in 1997; a mathematical-alphabet proposal followed in 1998 and was accepted in 1999. The work gave publishers broader, consistent math type for print and electronic documents.
Why can 𝓴 turn into plain k?
Compatibility normalization can fold it to plain k. NFKC, a compatibility text-normalization process, can strip the mathematical style. If software applies it to an equation, the distinction may disappear.
As of Unicode 18.0, math fonts can draw script letters differently; the standard leaves the exact drawing open. A font or renderer without suitable support may not display the intended form.

1Why does 𝓴 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
