What 𝓳 means
For Word in 2026, type 1D4F3 and press Alt+X.
It inserts a separate character. Formatting an ordinary j in bold cursive may look similar, but it does not create this encoded math letter.
What does 𝓳 mean in a formula?
It is a separate math letter, not a fixed value.
STIX, a shared math-font project proposed by Elsevier in 1995, was joined by the American Mathematical Society in 1997 to support a Unicode submission. In 1999, Unicode accepted its proposal for separate bold, script, and other math alphabets: different styles can name different variables, so flattening them in plain text can change a formula. These styles already appeared in math fonts; the encoding preserved them without giving 𝓳 a universal value.
The curl and weight vary by math font. The Unicode 18.0 standard defines no variation selector—a special extra character that requests an alternate drawing—for bold script, so there is no standardized switch to another bold-script shape.

1Will NFKC turn 𝓳 into j?
Yes. NFKC is a compatibility text-normalization form: it changes math-style alphabet characters like this to their plain Latin base, `j`, dropping the style distinction. Preserve the original when that distinction matters.
