What 𞁛 means
It labels a sound contrast that disappears in context. Phonology is the study of how a language organizes sounds; an archiphoneme is the shared category after that contrast disappears. A 1973 study of Ukrainian dialects uses this mark for /n/ and /l/ before another nasal consonant.
The broader Cyrillic notation predates this example: a 1905 study of Serbian dialects used superscript and subscript vowels to show degrees of vowel strength. In transcription, superscripts can add pronunciation detail, while subscripts can mark phonological categories.
Specialist notation used in phonetic and phonological descriptions.

1Questions people ask
1Why does 𞁛 show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 15.0 (2022), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
