What does the subscript mean here?
Its exact value depends on the transcription key. In phonology, the study of a language’s sound patterns, a subscript can mark an archiphoneme: a category for sounds whose differences disappear in a particular position. This is a notation mark, not a regular letter in an ordinary spelled word.
Why does this ka sit low?
Its position can change what a transcription says. Raised and lowered Cyrillic letters appear in pronunciation writing before digital text: in a 1905 study of Serbian dialects, scholar Aleksandar Belić used them to mark stronger or weaker vowel coloring. A printed transcription from 1962 shows this subscript ka beside raised ka forms used for other pronunciation details.
The separate character preserves that contrast in text; the same modifier can also take small pronunciation marks, called diacritics.
A specialized mark for linguistic transcription; the source’s notation key controls its reading.
Use ordinary к in a regular Cyrillic word; 𞁚 carries a transcription role.
