What 𝐥 means
It is a bold mathematical form of lowercase l.
Here, weight distinguishes a variable from its unbold counterpart; in a formula, it is part of the notation. In many physics texts, bold lowercase letters name vectors—quantities with direction and size—while scalar values use plain type. The surrounding formula defines what this particular l means.
Bold type became a vector marker
Boldface became one way to separate vectors from scalars in printed notation. In 1881, mathematician J. Willard Gibbs's notes used lowercase Greek letters for vectors and lowercase English letters for scalars. In 1886, English physicist Oliver Heaviside said he had introduced Clarendon, a heavy printer's type, for vectors. Mathematician Edwin Bidwell Wilson's influential Vector Analysis used bold Clarendon for vectors and plain type for scalars in 1901. Later mathematics reused boldness for other distinctions.
Why can 𝐥 look different on another device?
The viewing font may not contain the mathematical glyph.
Unicode's math guidance notes that a system may lack a special math font or display a different glyph. A missing-glyph box or fallback shape changes what you see, not which character the text contains.
Use 𝐥 in formulas where the bold weight has a defined mathematical role.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𝐥 become plain l?
It can happen when software applies compatibility normalization (NFKC or NFKD), which reduces mathematical alphabets to ordinary letters. Avoid those forms for formulas whose meaning depends on bold weight.
