Fullwidth Latin Capital Letter N

46/225

N is the capital Latin N in a fullwidth form, made to occupy a character cell like kana or kanji. In Japanese and other East Asian text, it can fit the layout; in Latin-only text, a string of fullwidth letters can suggest vaporwave or retro styling. Use ordinary N in everyday English, names, codes, and searches unless fullwidth is intended.

Text symbol

What N means

It is the ordinary capital N in a wider character form. In a Japanese or other CJK text grid, N can occupy a square-like cell alongside kana and ideographs. Its width belongs to the encoded character, so changing the font does not turn it into ordinary N.

The form comes from mixed-width East Asian computing, not from a single inventor. JIS X 0201 (1969) provided a Japanese Roman set; JIS C 6226-1978, later called JIS X 0208, expanded the Japanese character repertoire to include Latin letters alongside kana and kanji. Unicode retained duplicate width forms so older encodings could convert to and from Unicode without losing that distinction.

For reading, N and N are the same alphabetic letter; software treats them as separate characters unless compatibility normalization folds N to N. A comparison or form may therefore preserve the width difference.

What does N signal in a message?

In CJK text it can be layout; in Latin text it can be styling.

In Japanese composition, fullwidth Latin letters can fit the same character grid as Japanese writing, including in vertical text. A lone N in that setting is usually just a capital N fitted to the line.

Outside that setting, strings of fullwidth letters are used for vaporwave and retro-internet styling. As of 2026, that use can feel aesthetic or ironic even without Japanese characters; the letter still reads as N.

Neutral in Japanese and CJK typography; conspicuous, decorative, or retro-styled in ordinary Latin text.

Use ordinary N in names, codes, and searches unless fullwidth is required.

Questions people ask

2

Why did N turn into N?

Compatibility normalization can remove the width distinction, so software that applies it may output ordinary N.

Will N work in a username or form?

It depends on the field. The 2017 username profiles in RFC 8265 map fullwidth characters before comparison; another application may preserve or reject the distinction.
