What 𝑎 means
It represents a defined mathematical quantity.
Letters let formulas describe general quantities. In 1570, mathematician Gerolamo Cardano used a and b for known numbers; in 1591, mathematician François Viète used vowels for unknowns and consonants for knowns. René Descartes's 1637 algebra book La Géométrie used small italic a, b, c for knowns and x, y, z for unknowns.
Style can distinguish mathematical quantities
Math fonts can use italic, bold, and upright versions of one letter for different objects. Unicode keeps this form separate so plain-text formulas can preserve the distinction.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𝑎 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
