What 𝚐 means
It is the mathematical form of lowercase Latin g. The author defines its value; monospace can mark a distinct variable from plain g.
Why encode mathematical letter styles?
To keep mathematical distinctions in plain text. In 1999, Murray Sargent III and Barbara Beeton proposed these alphabets at STIX's request. STIX (Scientific and Technical Information Exchange) was a project to build fonts for scientific and engineering publishing. Their proposal listed monospace among styles already used for variables; separate characters let plain text preserve their distinct meanings and searches tell them apart.
Use it in mathematical or technical notation; style ordinary prose with normal letters.

1Does NFKC turn 𝚐 into g?
Yes. NFKC and NFKD fold mathematical alphabets into plain Latin or Greek letters, so 𝚐 becomes g and loses the distinction.
