What 𝚎 means
It is an e whose style can carry mathematical meaning.
In formulas, a changed letter style can mark a different symbol or variable, rather than add emphasis. This e belongs to a complete mathematical monospace alphabet, so the distinction can be preserved as a character in plain text. The letter itself has no fixed scientific quantity; the formula says what it represents.
The STIX project set out to build a comprehensive font set for scientific and technical publishing. Publishers gathered their needed characters in 1995; the American Mathematical Society joined in 1997 to sponsor a Unicode submission, and the mathematical alphabet was accepted in 1999. The alphabet also filled out an older handful of mathematical “letterlike symbols”—individual script and double-struck letters—with consistent full alphabets.
How do I type mathematical monospace e in LaTeX?
In math mode, write \mathtt{e}.
For a full LaTeX example, surround it with math delimiters: $\mathtt{e}$ . The source file may keep the command rather than a dedicated Unicode character.
Why does mathematical monospace e look different across fonts?
Unicode fixes the style category, but each font draws it differently.
The character carries the monospace math distinction, not one fixed drawing or typeface. Its visible glyph depends on the font and math renderer.
At home in mathematical notation, where letter style can distinguish one symbol from another.
For decorative prose, ordinary letters with text styling preserve easier search and accessibility.

1Why does 𝚎 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
