What 𝚞 means
In formulas, it marks a lowercase u in monospace style.
Monospace means each character takes the same horizontal width. The formula supplies the letter's meaning; this character does not name one fixed quantity.
Why is this a separate character?
In math, letter style can change which variable is meant.
In 1998, a proposal linked to the Scientific and Technical Information Exchange (STIX), a scientific publishing project, recorded that mathematical font variants were already used to distinguish symbols and argued that they should survive in plain text. It included a monospace alphabet.
Technical and mathematical: in a formula, its style can distinguish it from other variables.
For ordinary words, use font formatting; Unicode intends these mathematical letters for mathematical or technical notation.

Questions people ask
2Why did 𝚞 turn into plain u?
It can happen when software applies NFKC, a text-normalization form that folds compatibility distinctions. It maps mathematical alphabet letters to their plain Latin bases.
Why does 𝚞 look different across apps?
It can: fonts and text engines vary in support for mathematical letters, so an app may substitute a fallback glyph or show a missing-character box.
