mathematical monospace small v

Mathematical Monospace Small V

648/996

𝚟 is the Latin letter v in a mathematical monospace alphabet. In technical notation, that style can distinguish a variable from plain v, so the character carries more than a typewriter look. For ordinary prose, format a regular v with a font instead.

Text symbol

What 𝚟 means

Its monospace style can mark a distinct mathematical variable.

The STIX project, a publisher-backed effort for scientific and mathematical text, proposed separate mathematical alphabets in 1999. The purpose was to preserve those letter-style distinctions in plain text; the chosen font still supplies the actual glyph design.

How do I type 𝚟?

On GNOME, enter 1D69F; in Microsoft Word, type it and press AltX.

The usual v key makes ordinary Latin v. The hexadecimal entry methods produce the mathematical monospace character itself.

Technical and mathematical: the monospace shape can distinguish a variable from plain v.

For ordinary prose, use a formatted plain v; Unicode intends 𝚟 for mathematical or technical notation.

Questions people ask

1

Will 𝚟 turn into v?

Yes. Some text systems normalize characters—a way of standardizing them before storing or comparing them. Under NFKC or NFKD, mathematical letters map to ordinary Latin or Greek letters, so 𝚟 becomes v and loses its encoded monospace distinction.
