What ⅴ means
It is the small-form sign for five. Roman numerals grew from earlier counting marks in ancient Italy. One scholarly explanation connects some Roman signs with tally-like marks used by the Etruscans, an ancient people of Italy; the exact development is debated. The value stayed five as the letterforms changed.
Later, scribes and printers used Roman numerals for book divisions and page numbers. For front matter—the opening pages before the main text—they could use lowercase forms such as the ordinary letter v; that style does not require the dedicated character ⅴ.
Why does ⅴ look like v?
It is a dedicated numeral form with the value five. It resembles the Latin small letter v and has a compatibility relationship with that letter.
Roman-numeral characters were encoded partly for compatibility with East Asian standards and upright typesetting in vertical text, where lines run top to bottom. In regular prose, plain v is easier to search and compare. Compatibility normalization, a text-processing step that folds related forms, can make ⅴ and v match; without it, software may treat them as different characters.
Specialized and typographic; in prose it reads as deliberate formatting.
Use plain v when search or exact text matching must work reliably.

1Questions people ask
2Does ⅴ work the same as v in search?
Not always. They are distinct characters. Search tools that do not apply compatibility normalization can treat them as different, while normalized text can match them.
Can I use ⅴ in normal text?
Yes, but the ordinary Latin letter v is usually clearer and more compatible with regular text processing. Use ⅴ where a dedicated numeral character serves a typographic layout.
