What u means
Read it as “you” when the sentence fits. In “R u free?” (“Are you free?”), u is the person being asked; in “Thank u” (“Thank you”), it is the person being thanked. The spelling changes, not who the message addresses.
Read the words around u before reading attitude into it. “u serious?” (“Are you serious?”) can express surprise or a challenge, but the abbreviation alone does not settle which. It is shorthand, not a mood detector.
Why do people type u instead of you?
It saves typing and sets an informal tone. Using an abbreviation for “you” can be a deliberate style choice rather than a spelling mistake. Writers adjust shorthand to their audience: someone who uses u with you may still spell out “you” in a work email.
u fits casual conversation better than polished correspondence.
When professionalism matters, write “you” rather than risking a careless impression.

Better to spell out “you” unless your exchanges already use that shorthand. Match an established casual style rather than assuming one.
